Profile of the fellow

Alexandra Steinhauser is originally from Schladming, Austria, and recently moved to Groningen to start her PhD in single-molecule biophysics under the supervision of Kasia Tych. Before coming here, she completed her Master’s degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biomedicine at the University of Graz, where she discovered my interest in the fascinating world of membrane biophysics. As part of the EVOLVE consortium, Alexandra’s PhD project now focuses on investigating the single-molecule dynamics of transmembrane transport proteins. To achieve this, she uses optical tweezers and TIRF microscopy (in simple terms: Alexandra likes catching molecules and watching proteins dance). Outside of research, she enjoys discovering new places around the world, as well as sports like skiing, horse riding, hiking, and running. She also likes poetry and reading, and even has the Second Law of Thermodynamics tattooed as a reminder of her fascination with science.
