Can Karaman was born in Turkey in 2002 and moved to Belgium with his family at the age of two. From an early age, he was fascinated by understanding the world around him, which naturally led him to pursue the sciences. He obtained his bachelor’s degree at Maastricht University, where he received an interdisciplinary education in the fundamental sciences with a particular focus on chemistry. He then continued his studies at UCLouvain, earning a master’s degree in chemistry.
During his master’s, Can gained valuable research experience through an internship at Johnson & Johnson and a master’s thesis in supramolecular chemistry. It was during this research project that he developed a strong interest in the physical behaviour and dynamic properties of supramolecular systems.
These experiences led him to begin a PhD in Prof. Wouter Roos’s group as part of the EVOLVE programme. His research focuses on using high-speed atomic force microscopy (HS-AFM) to visualize the real-time dynamics of supramolecular systems designed by the Feringa group. By revealing how these systems behave at the nanoscale, his work aims to improve our understanding and control of supramolecular processes relevant to both biological systems and advanced functional materials.
